Top surgery scars/ nipple tattoo

What is gender-affirming nipple and areola tattooing?

Gender-affirming nipple and areola tattooing is a specialist form of medical tattooing used to cover scars from top surgery or recreate the appearance of nipples and areolas following breast surgery, chest reconstruction or other gender-affirming procedures. Using advanced realism techniques, Jo can create the appearance of a natural nipple and areola even where the skin is completely flat or heavily scarred. Every tattoo is individually designed around your anatomy, skin tone, chest shape and the result you want to achieve.

Can you create masculine nipples as well as feminine nipples?

Yes. Jo creates both masculine and feminine nipple and areola tattoos and equally somewhere in the middle if you're not quite sure what look you want. For a more masculine result, the size, shape, placement, colour and overall character of the nipple and areola are designed to complement the chest and create a natural-looking masculine appearance. For a more feminine result, the same attention to anatomy, colour, proportion and realism is used to create a softer, more traditionally feminine appearance. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Your treatment is designed around you and how you want your chest to look.

How long does it take?

A full double nipple and areola tattoo appointment takes approximately 2-3 hours, including consultation, design, pre-drawing, colour selection and tattooing. The exact treatment time can vary depending on whether you are having one or two nipples tattooed, the amount of scar tissue present and the complexity of the design.

What happens during an areola/nipple Tattoo treatment?

Your appointment begins with a consultation where we discuss exactly what you want to achieve, including the size, shape, placement, colour and overall appearance of your new nipples and areolas. Jo will then carefully mark and draw the proposed design directly onto your skin using temporary markers. This gives you the opportunity to see the placement and shape before any permanent tattooing begins. Once you are happy with the design, pigments are selected to complement your skin tone and achieve your desired result. If you have sensation in the area, a numbing gel can be used to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. You can relax, talk, listen to music or simply switch off during your appointment.

Does areola tattoo hurt?

Most people find that discomfort is very minimal, and often doze off or just relax. I use a good numbing gel throughout your treatment and I’m trained in working on scarring, using a very gentle approach to avoid aggravating the delicate skin.

Can you tattoo over scars following top surgery?

Yes. Jo specialises in medical tattooing and is experienced in working with post-surgical skin and scar tissue. Where appropriate, tattooing can be used alongside nipple and areola creation to help soften the appearance of scars and integrate them into the overall design. Every person's healing is different, so suitability will be assessed during your consultation.

Will I be able to go to work straight after, or out that night?

Most people can return to their normal daily activities, that day, although the area may feel a little tender afterwards. You will be given clear aftercare instructions and a sterile dressing where required. You should avoid heavy sweating, swimming, baths, saunas and strenuous exercise during the initial healing period. Your individual aftercare instructions will be explained fully at your appointment.

How do I prepare for areola tattoo?

Avoid alcohol the night before your appointment and make sure you are well hydrated. On the day of your treatment, it is best to avoid caffeine and energy drinks. You should also discuss any medication you take with Jo before your appointment, particularly anything that can affect bleeding or skin sensitivity. Most importantly, make sure you are fully healed from your surgery before booking your tattoo (minimum of 6 months) If you are unsure whether your skin is ready, please get in touch before booking

Why do I need 2-3 sessions?

When working on scar tissue, 2-3 sessions are required, with a minimum healing period of 6 weeks between treatments. The first session establishes the shape, colour and initial realism. Once the skin has healed, Jo can assess how the pigments have settled, how your individual skin has healed and make any adjustments needed during the second session. This allows the realism and 3D detail to be built gradually over scar tissue - rather than applying too much pigment at once which can give an un natural look. Jo takes a “less is more” approach, particularly when creating realistic results on post-surgical skin to build layers of detail per session.

What is the aftercare for 3D areola tattoos and areola pigmentation?

You will see your results straight away! A cream will be applied and clear sterile dressings for 3 days. You may feel a little tender but typically not sore. You need to avoid the gym and excessive sweating or steams or saunas. You may feel a little more tired that day than usual. Drink plenty of water and rest. In 3 days time you will remove the dressing and gently clean and apply more cream and another dressing for 3 days. After 6 days you can apply cream and the following day resume to normal bathing and exercise.
